At Bluewater Physiotherapy Clinic in Durham, we often get questions about the nature of physiotherapy from clients and potential clients alike. Below is a selection of the more commonly asked questions with answers.
What is physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy evaluates, restores and maintains your physical function in a drug-free environment. As a regulated health care profession, physiotherapy can be done independently or in conjunction with other types of medical management. The practice can be useful in diagnosing and managing musculo-skeletal conditions of the back or neck, or joint pain such as hips, knees, ankles, wrists, elbows or shoulders. The goal of physiotherapy is to improve balance, strength and mobility, while protecting your body against future concerns.
What education does a physiotherapist have in Ontario?
Practicing physiotherapists must have a degree from a physical therapy education program and be registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.
How can a physiotherapist help me?
Physiotherapists begin rehabilitation after you have undergone surgery, been in an accident or have been injured. Unlike medical doctors, physiotherapists are not only interested in your symptoms, but also the factors that contribute to your discomfort. After performing assessments, the physiotherapists can identify the problem and develop practices and exercise programs that can lead you to recovery.
How do physiotherapists perform assessments?
The physiotherapists will start by gathering your health history and evaluating your pain, movement patterns, strength, and range of motion. The information is then used to develop a personalized treatment plan to help you reach your strength and mobility goals.
What techniques will the physiotherapist use?
Your physiotherapist will work closely with you to perform exercises, monitor progress and modify treatment goals according to changes in your health.
What should I wear to my initial assessment with the physiotherapist?
It’s best to come in comfortable clothing for easy mobility.
Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist?
A doctor referral is not required for physiotherapy – but they are welcome. Referrals can be done through a health care provider or on your own account. Simply contact us directly, or have a health practitioner call or fax us the referral request.
